5 reading habits to teach your children

1. Set aside a reading period every day that is workable and reasonable for your child.
2. Incorrect decoding can devastate comprehension. If a child is having difficulty decoding, correctly, the words that are posing difficulty.
3. Effective summaries are the keys to comprehension. Have regular discussions with your child where you model effective summaries. As your child progresses, he or she can start producing the summaries independently.
4. In general, there is little need to be concerned with pleasure reading that your child elects to do. The key area that needs attention is imposed reading that the child may not like to carry out. Try to provide as much supervision as your child needs to deal with this material effectively.
5. Try to ensure that your child can smoothly and competently read material for a sustained period of time (this will vary according to age from about 15 minutes for the early grades to 45 minutes for the advanced grades).
