Ask Reading Kingdom: Education and Learning in the Future

education
In a letter to his daughter, Thomas Jefferson offered the following advice about spelling: “Take care that you never spell a word wrong. Always before you write a word, consider how it is spelled, and, if you do not remember, turn to a dictionary.”

Education and learning has changed dramatically since the times of Thomas Jefferson, and not always in a positive way. But will it improve in the future? Lloyd (teacher) asks:

What’s your thoughts on education and learning in the future, will it improve or not?

Dr. Marion Blank, the creator of www.ReadingKingdom.com says: This is an issue that is close to the hearts of everyone working at the Reading Kingdom. We think we are in an age where a marriage of good curriculum and technology is available to bring incredible benefits to every child. Will it happen? No one can answer that question. There are many signs that, as a nation, we are not moving in the right direction to achieve the potential that is within our grasp. For example, much of the current debate on education has centered on vilifying teachers for being incompetent – which is both wrong and a major distraction. The rest of our energy seems to be spent on promoting testing – which is another dead-end as far as improving student outcomes.

What we have found is that few of our leaders are taking the time to offer teachers the effective curricula, materials and support they need to truly teach all children. For example, almost no attention is being paid to the fact that according to the US Dept. of Education 2 out 3 students are failing to become proficient at reading (as seen in every “National Assessment of Educational Progress done since 1992). So perhaps it would be useful to reframe your question to “can education improve or not?” The answer is that it certainly can—but it will require our nation’s leaders to adopt a new, far different and more enlightened approach.
