Ask Reading Kingdom: What will higher education look like 20 years from now?

As Yogi Berra said, “It’s tough to make predictions, especially about the future.” Prediction is always dicey and in our phenomenally fast changing world, it is well-nigh impossible to say what any situation will be like in 20 years time. However, there are trends currently operating that are a source of deep concern.

I am particularly concerned by the ongoing attacks on public education. I have worked all my professional life to improve the content of what children are offered in public schools. They are critical to our society and to an informed democracy. Now though, public education is being severely cut and at times, totally eliminated. For example, a significant amount of public funds are being transferred to charter schools despite the lack of solid evidence that they perform any better than the public schools they are attempting to replace. Further, even when public schools co-exist with charter schools, the public schools are often stripped of funds (via the cutting of programs such as music, art, phys ed, etc) so that the funds can be transferred to the charter schools. Diane Ravitch, an education policy analyst, writes extensively on this vital topic. It is well worth following her blog at
