Summary:

Thoughtfully illustrated, with a mix of compelling photographs and whimsical pictures – my favorite is the two-page spread on pages 18 and 19 – this comprehensive study of the whale will enlighten readers, as it reveals how man’s relationship with the whale has developed over time, from fearful, to aggressive, and then to respectful. The narrative immediately captures readers’ imaginations with an account of the many ancient whale-related legends that have been passed down throughout the generations. It goes on to describe how man eventually discovered the value of a dead whale (oil for lamps, baleen for combs, and teeth for jewelry) and whale hunting became a big business. The potential extinction of the whale and the resulting regulations to limit the killings are explained. Siebert also explores the science behind the whale, including how its brain works, how it relates to people and how it communicates with other whales. Facts and figures are mixed with stories to create an easy-to-read non-fiction book that will inspire readers to do what they can to protect these animals, and should help to promote their safety in the future.”
