Recommended Reading for Kids: The Giver

The Giver by Lois Lowry, is one of the Reading Kingdom’s recommended reading for kids. Reading expert and Reading Kingdom creator, Dr. Marion Blank explains why:

In a community that is supposedly perfect but where everything and everyone is identical, Jonas, the main character, discovers that he is “different.” Central to his difference is his role as the Receiver of Memory–the one who has access to what life has to offer including love, pain, frustration, color, cold, and freedom—with its right and responsibility to make choices and to follow the call of your individuality. Like other anti-Utopian books, such as those of George Orwell, this book has been a target of controversy. But for thoughtful young teenagers who are pondering the complexities of life and growing up, this book provides an enriching and compelling read.
