How Independent Bookstores Are Navigating Uncertain Times — and How Readers Can Help

As businesses across the US close their doors during the COVID-19 crisis, independent bookstores are among the countless small businesses impacted. Forced to close and cancel events, many are now bracing for the potentially severe financial setbacks that the crisis will bring them.

While many bookstores have closed completely, others are finding creative ways to try to keep serving the public while doing their best to keep people safe.

Just as many restaurants continue to offer delivery and take out, some bookstores are offering book delivery via mail and employee drop off. Community Bookstore of Brooklyn, New York, is offering free delivery when patrons order online. Across the river in Greenwich Village, Bonnie of Bonnie Slotnick Cookbooks is continuing to deliver her out of print cookbooks on her bike, according to her Facebook page and voicemail.
