Recommended Reading for Kids: Ramona Quimby, Age 8

Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary, is one of the Reading Kingdom’s recommended books for children. Reading expert and Reading Kingdom creator, Dr. Marion Blank explains why:

Beverly Cleary is one of those rare and amazing adults who has the power to see the world through a child’s eyes. The enormous popularity of her series of books on Ramona attests to her talents. In this book, the sixth in the series, Ramona is entering third grade at a new school and she is committed to doing her share for the family. Achieving that goal is not easy, but it is never dull. Her mother is working and her father is back at college, so the family is under a lot of pressure. Ramona tries her best to cope but there are endless encounters that plague her days such as accidentally crushing a raw egg into her hair at the school cafeteria, being forced to play Uncle Rat with her annoying young neighbor, and, worst of all, throwing up in her classroom. But Ramona is full of too much enthusiasm and energy to ever be down for long. Throughout, her thought processes are amusing, touching, and revealing. This is the sort of book that shows young readers that they are not alone in dealing with life’s trials and tribulations.
