Recommended Reading for Kids: The Cricket in Times Square

The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden, is one of the Reading Kingdom’s recommended books for children. Reading expert and Reading Kingdom creator, Dr. Marion Blank explains why:

It’s always a treat when a talented author takes the ambitions and plights of our fellow human beings and let’s us view them through the eyes of our animal compatriots.

In this case, it’s a cricket who changes the lives of a host of New Yorkers. Little Chester from Connecticut unwittingly ends up in the Big Apple after jumping into the picnic basket of some unsuspecting New Yorkers. Mario, the son of Mama and Papa Bellini, owners of the subway-station newsstand, hears the cricket chirping and begs his parents to let him keep the little insect. Then wonder of wonders, Chester becomes the most famous musician in the city.

Eventually Chester is able to return to the country, but not before he has experienced endless adventures and touched the lives of many people.  The story is a surprisingly suspenseful tale that your children will remember for years.
