Recommended Reading for Kids: Shiloh

Kids book Shiloh

Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, is one of the Reading Kingdom’s recommended books for children. Reading expert and Reading Kingdom creator, Dr. Marion Blank explains why:

The link between dogs and people is amazingly powerful and this book shows just how deep and complex the relationship can be.

In it, 11 year-old Marty Preston finds a mistreated beagle pup in his West Virginia hometown. Along with loving and caring for the dog, Marty faces a host of ethical questions: Should he return the dog to its owner only to have the animal face further abuse again? Should he tell his parents? Should he steal food that the dog needs to survive?

The beauty of this book, a Newberry Award winner, is that it combines heart and morality and responsibility in a language that is compelling for third- and fourth-grade readers.
